Pirates

errorPiracy was a problem thousands of years before the Spanish began to bring gold, silver and other treasures from the New World back to Spain. Men sailed the seas as pirates when countries began to cross the Oceans and Seas to trade goods with each other. There were powerful pirates that sailed the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas. These pirates set up a large pirate nation in Cilicia. Cilicia is now part of the country of Turkey. Barbary corsairs controlled the western part of the Mediterranean. Vikings were brave and strong pirates. They sailed all over the Atlantic Ocean, but especially terrorized the European coastlines. Piracy was also active in the waters surrounding Asia. As ships were built bigger and better and men became brave, piracy began to spread into the New World.

Black BearderrorBlack Beard was an imposing site. He stood well over six feet tall and was as strong and as big an ox. He was known to be brave and by today’s standard was psychotic, knives and a his cutlass. In battle he would often put matches under his hat or braided into his beard so that it would appear that his head was on fire. However, he was quite successful at his trade, so his crew accepted his behaviour.

Treasure MapserrorBuried pirate treasure, marked with an X on a map, is largely the invention of adventure writers. Most of the time pirates attacked lightly armed merchant ships, stealing food and weapons.

Code of Conduct

1. No women were allowed on board.

2. Captured women were not to be molested.

3. The share of each pirates booty was agreed on.

4. Death was the penalty for killing or stealing from another pirate.

5. A trail was given before punishment was given. The pirate crew was the jury.

6. A pirate could be marooned on a deserted island if he broke too many rules.

7. No lighted lamps or cigarettes were allowed below decks.

Facts about Pirates

Pirates often didn’t get enough vitamin C while on long voyages which resulted in them getting a disease called “Rickets” that caused them to go blind in one eye. This is why pirates often are depicted wearing eye-patches.

Blackbeard’s peg leg was a medical necessity, he lost his leg to diabetes, but all the other pirates got wooden legs as a fashion choice. Some of the peg legs used by pirates were actually quite gaudy and covered in jewels.

The combination to Davy Jones Locker was right 32, left 17, right 26.

Female pirates were very common and much prized for their hair-free lower backs.
